Flavored Coffee—Few Calories But All the Taste
Although those calorie filled desserts can be very tempting, most of us can’t allow ourselves to indulge in them very often. One way to be able to enjoy those tempting dessert flavors and not worry about the calories is with flavored coffees. Being able to enjoy the taste of German Chocolate cake or Toasted Chestnuts and not worry about any added pounds is a winning situation. With flavored coffees, you can satisfy your sweet tooth, and there are so many flavors from which to choose.
With the cold weather and people staying inside now, flavored coffees are becoming more popular. When flavored coffee is made, the coffee beans are coated with flavor compounds to supplement the coffee beans’ natural taste. This coating helps extend the shelf life of coffee because it disguises changes in flavor due to decaffeination, oxidation, or the aging processes.
Flavored coffees have been with us for a long time. Although they have been around in one form or another for centuries, the gourmet coffee boom of the 1990s has made us all aware of and interested in these more exotic flavors of coffee. Today’s technology has given us the ability to make almost any flavor of coffee.
In medieval times, people developed flavors by adding nuts and berries to their coffee. Even a few hundred years ago in the Middle East, people blended nuts and spices to flavor their coffee. Because our technology allows for more variety, we not only use natural spices to flavor our coffee but have found ways that nature can’t provide to spice up our morning or evening cup. The first thing added to brewed coffee was flavored syrups to give a change of taste. Then we learned how to introduce complex flavors directly onto the beans as part of a post-roasting process. As many as eighty different flavor profiles may be used to achieve the desired taste. When you brew coffee with these flavored coffee beans, the taste comes out in your cup of coffee. There are many flavors to choose from such as Caramel Apple, Pumpkin Pie, and Peanut Butter Cup. These flavors only sound like they are high in calories. You don’t have to feel guilty when drinking one of these flavors since they only contain a few calories.
The roasters start with Arabica beans, since these are a high quality of coffee beans. This is the oldest cultivated bean and the most widely used. The place where the beans are grown will influence the finished taste of the coffee. The roaster uses natural oils from many sources such as vanilla beans, cocoa beans, and different nuts and berries. These natural oils are combined with synthetic flavors to create the desired taste. These oils are usually added to the beans after they are roasted. If the flavors are in a dry form, the beans are ground and then the flavors are added. To keep the coffee and the taste fresh, the coffee is quickly packaged once the flavors are added.
So the next time your sweet tooth wants a taste of something rich and you want to enjoy a rich taste without the calories, consider trying one of the many flavored varieties to treat yourself. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this special treat by yourself or with family and friends.
